The YSEALI Academic Fellows Program 2027 in the USA is designed to strengthen collaboration between the U.S. and Southeast Asia. This fully funded exchange program will build leadership capabilities of youth. Through the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative Academic Fellows Program, students will gain academic field experience. They will get a chance to observe energy security and supply chain operational challenges by interacting with American experts.

This youth leadership program will bring together undergraduate or recent graduates aged 18-25 from Southeast Asia to the U.S. Scheduled for five weeks, the academic exchange program will take place at a U.S. university or college. For this fellowship, each program will include an academic residency and community service activities. During the fully funded fellowship, students will explore the relevant processes through interactive trainings and simulations. They will participate in different sessions, events, site visits, and cultural activities.

Along with a closing workshop, the fellowship also includes a Reciprocal Exchange component that provides Americans an opportunity to go to Southeast Asia. The YSEALI program has four themes including Liberty and Freedom, Natural Resources, Economic Prosperity, and Peace and Security. These programs are offered at 8 host institutions across the USA. Eligibility Criteria of the YSEALI Academic Fellows Program in the USA:

  • Applicants must be between 18 to 25 years old.
  • Candidates should be citizens and residents of one of the countries including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
  • Citizens of Burma and Laos are not eligible to apply for the 2027 U.S.-based YSEALI Academic Fellows Program.
  • Applicants must be physically living in an ASEAN member state through the start of their chosen fellowship.
  • Candidates should be full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate students from a college, university, or have graduated with their undergraduate degree within the last 4 years.
  • Applicants must be proficient in English.
  • Candidates must not be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
  • Applicants must not be employees or immediate family members of employees of the U.S. Government.
  • They should not be alumni of the YSEALI Academic Fellows.
  • Applicants should be eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa.
