The University of British Columbia Public Scholars Award 2026/27 is a funded opportunity for doctoral students at UBC who want to connect their research with public benefit and real-world impact. The purpose of this award is to support talented scholars from different disciplines and help them build strong community connections through innovative and collaborative research projects. The initiative encourages students to work beyond traditional academic boundaries and contribute positively to society through their scholarly work.

The UBC Public Scholars Award is part of the Public Scholars Initiative (PSI). Awards of up to CAD $10,000 are available to support research activities, professional development, travel related to scholarly work, and student stipends where applicable. The program supports doctoral students who are working on projects connected to sustainability, health, education, environment, public policy, social innovation, and other areas that serve the public good. Each year, approximately 30 students from UBC Vancouver and around 5 students from UBC Okanagan are selected for the program.

The Vancouver campus of UBC is located in one of Canada’s most beautiful and diverse cities. Vancouver is known for its natural beauty, multicultural environment, beaches, mountains, and high quality of life. Students selected for the PSI award not only receive funding support for their research but also gain valuable opportunities to experience cultural diversity, collaboration, and community engagement in an international academic environment.

As the purpose of this Canada award is to create meaningful public impact through research, PSI scholars become part of a strong interdisciplinary network at UBC. Students are expected to participate in PSI events, engage with fellow scholars, and present their work at academic and public engagement activities such as “PhDs Go Public.” Through these experiences, scholars develop professional skills, expand career opportunities, and strengthen connections with researchers, communities, and organizations beyond academia.
