- Applicants should have a first or upper second class honors degree or equivalent.
- Applicants must not be currently enrolled as PhD students.
- Applicants must not have already completed their PhD degree.

Step 1:
- Applicants have to nominate one PhD supervisor at University of Galway from the list available at: https://www.universityofgalway.ie/findasupervisor/).
- Applicants have to contact and discuss their PhD research plan with the potential supervisor.
Step 2:
- Candidates are required to complete Hardiman scholarship application form.
- Provide all the details including personal information, education details, any academic awards or scholarships received, your research experience, personal statement, any other relevant information, and CV.
- Provide details of your proposed supervisor.
- Mention details of two academic referees in the application form.
- Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
Step 3:
- Complete the University of Galway Supervisor Form available at: https://www.universityofgalway.ie/media/hardiman/files/Hardiman_Supervisor_Form_2026.docx.
- Applicants have to fill in Section A and send it to their proposed supervisor to complete Section B, and then submit the form to hrscholar@universityofgalway.ie
Step 4:
- Applicants will have to complete Section A of both Academic Reference Forms and send them to their referees to complete Section B of the Academic Reference Form available at: https://www.universityofgalway.ie/media/hardiman/files/Hardiman_Academic_Reference_Form_2026.docx. Then send it to hrscholar@universityofgalway.ie
- Read the declaration and then type your name in the “Applicant’s signature” box.
- Save the application form in PDF format. Write your full name in the file name.
- Then, email the application form as an attachment with your full name in the subject to: hrscholar@universityofgalway.ie
- Send the Supervisor Form and Academic Reference Forms before the deadline to hrscholar@universityofgalway.ie
