The European Environment Agency (EEA) calls on all nature and photography lovers to showcase their photographic talent in the annual EEA Photo Competition 2024. The photo contest theme for this year, “Urban Treasures,” invites international participants to capture the essence of cities and towns through heartwarming moments that give hope and happiness for a more sustainable future.

The urban theme focuses on how more environmentally friendly and livable communities can be developed while also celebrating the good steps EEA is making in that direction. This photography contest is a great opportunity for international students to win exciting prizes and have their work featured in EEA publications and exhibitions.

The international photo competition categories are Wildlife in the City, Charming Neighborhoods, and Green at Heart. The category “wildlife in the city” appreciates the peaceful coexistence of people and wildlife in urban areas. In addition to being made of concrete and bricks, metropolitan areas serve as home to thousands of significant and fascinating species. The cities are home to a wide variety of wildlife, from charming companions like birds and squirrels to shy creatures like bats and spiders. This category draws attention to biodiversity and inspires us to notice and value the tiny animals who live alongside us in our cities. Images could feature inquisitive foxes investigating backyard gardens, wildlife/green corridors, deer in urban green areas, or birdhouses.

European Environment Agency Photo Competition is to include the “Charming neighborhoods” category that honors the sense of accomplishment we get from seeing how environmentally friendly everything is around us when strolling around the streets. Take note of the solar-powered streetlights, neighborhood composting facilities, pedestrian-friendly architecture, native plant landscaping, seasonal product markets nearby, or kids playing in urban parks. Images could also feature industrial areas, former factories, green structures, and vertical forests.

The third category of Denmark’s European Environment Agency photo competition 2024 is “Green at Heart” which is about humans and highlights the regular things we do to protect the environment. Observe how our actions affect our shared environment over time and send ripples throughout the community. In what ways are you or your community choosing to change the world? Small lifestyle adjustments like rewinding our gardens, embracing the concepts of reduce, reuse, and recycle, planting trees, or switching to a more environmentally friendly all help to create a more livable urban environment and happy community life.
