Beneits of JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship in Japan 2026-2027:
If you’re selected for the JSPS Fellowship, you will receive full financial support during your stay in Japan:
- Airfare: You’ll get a round-trip plane ticket to and from Japan, based on JSPS rules
- Monthly Allowance:
- If you have a Ph.D., you’ll get 362,000 JPY per month
- If you don’t have a Ph.D. yet, you’ll get 200,000 JPY per month
- If you finish your Ph.D. during the fellowship, your monthly allowance will increase to 362,000 JPY from the next month onward (but past payments will not be changed)
- Settling-in Allowance: You’ll receive 200,000 JPY if your stay is 3 months or longer
- Health Insurance: Your overseas travel insurance will be covered
- Research Support: Up to 70,000 JPY per month is available to help with your research expenses (your host institution in Japan must apply for this on your behalf)
- Note: If you are already in Japan before the fellowship starts, you won’t receive airfare or the settling-in allowance.
- This support will help you live comfortably in Japan and focus on your research.

How to apply for JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship in Japan:
- To apply for the JSPS Fellowship, follow these steps:
- Find a host researcher in Japan. You need their support for your application. JSPS will not help you find a host, but you can ask your local JSPS Alumni Association for guidance. Find contacts here
- Apply through the ASEAN University Network (AUN) website.
- Your application will be reviewed by your country’s nominating authority.
- If selected, your name will be sent to JSPS by 1 December 2025.
- Final results will be announced about three months later. You and your nominating authority will get an email.
- You can only apply once a year. Don’t apply with more than one host or nominating authority.

Required Documents for JSPS Fellowship:
To apply for the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship, you need to prepare the following documents:
- Academic Documents
- Transcripts from your Bachelor’s degree to your most recent degree
- A copy of your Ph.D. diploma or certificate
- If you haven’t received your Ph.D. yet, submit:
- A letter from your university stating the expected award date, or
- A certificate showing you are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program, along with a letter from your supervisor confirming you’ll finish within two years
- The Ph.D. award date must be the official university date—not your thesis defense date
- Recommendation Letter
- A letter from your current academic or employer institution supporting your application
- Letter from Host Researcher in Japan
- A letter from your Japanese host researcher confirming they agree to guide your research
- If you don’t have this letter when applying, you can send it later—but it must be submitted by 15 August 2025
- Research Plan (2 pages)
- Explain your research background
- State the purpose of your research
- Outline your research plan
- Mention the expected results and impact
- List of Publications (1 page, if any)
- Include only peer-reviewed papers that are printed or officially accepted
- Format: All authors, title, journal name, volume, issue, page numbers, month, and year.
