Applications window for the DW traineeship in Germany, 2027-2028, is now open. Funded by Deutsche Welle (DW), the paid journalism program will take place for 18-months, in Bonn and Berlin, Germany. Trainees will receive a monthly salary of 2196 to 2473 Euros for the entire program duration. The DW internship program will bring together aspiring and creative journalists from all across the world, adding more diversity and inclusion to the program.

With 6 months focusing on theory and practical based seminar modules, the paid traineeship will also include 9 months of placements with different DW editorial departments in Berlin, Bonn, and one foreign bureau. Moreover, participants will have a one-month internship elective station, helping them to put into practice what they have learned during the modules. With no age limit, the bilingual journalism program will begin in January 2027, and end in June 2028.

During the Traineeship program in Europe, participants will be involved in innovative projects, providing them a chance to learn the skills and tools that are in high demand. The traineeship program in Germany will cover fields including mobile reporting, multimedia storytelling, data and social media journalism, and virtual reality through seminars, workshops, editorial offices and foreign bureaus. Eligibility Criteria for DW Traineeship in Germany 2027-28:

  • Applicants must complete a multi-level application process.
  • Applicants are required to submit creative ideas and participate in an online assessment.
  • Candidates applying should be open-minded and able to think critically.
  • Applicants must have completed a university/college degree, an apprenticeship or have graduated from a journalism school before the program.
  • All applicants have to provide digital copies of their educational certificates.
  • Applicants should have interest and experience working in journalism.
  • Applicants are required to provide samples of their published or broadcasted work.
  • Candidates who are interested in switching to journalism from law, economics, science or technology/IT, can also apply.
  • Application documents should not be sent by email.
  • Applicants should have good German language and Excellent English language skills.

How to apply for DW Traineeship in Germany 2027-2028:

  • Register your email on the online application portal.
  • A confirmation email will be sent on your email address, providing details about the next steps of the application process.
  • The e-mail will contain different application tasks such as filling a questionnaire and producing an application video.
  • It is mandatory to complete these tasks and upload before the deadline.
  • In the first round, all applicants will have to fill in the online application through the online application system.
  • Candidates will have to upload proof of their studies/ training, and include up to 3 work samples. (videos, audio samples, texts or social media posts)
  • At the end of the online application, answer the questions with your creativity.
  • In the second round, shortlisted applicants are invited to an online assessment center. They will have to complete different tasks including, a timed writing test, a guided discussion with tutors and filming a TikTok video.
  • In the third round, successful candidates are informed about their selection, and they will meet with DW’s directors, chief editors and top journalists.

Documents required for DW Traineeship in Germany:

  • Letter of motivation.
  • Current CV. (one using Europass, and one in a freely chosen format)
  • University diploma or training certificates.
  • Samples of your work (up-to 3, and can be video, audio, text, social media posts).
  • A copy of passport and residency permit (For non-EU citizens who are currently living in an EU country).

If available:

  • Proof of your language skills according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (for German and English languages).
  • Internship certificate.
  • Employment references.
  • Letter of recommendation.
