The Chevening British Library Fellowships 2027 in the UK offer a fully funded 12-month fellowship for mid-career professionals, researchers, and academics to work at the British Library in London. The fellowship will run from January 2027 to December 2027 or January 2028, giving participants the opportunity to conduct research and collaborate with experts at one of the world’s leading cultural and research institutions. Importantly, there is no application fee, and the there is no need of IELTS requirement.

These Chevening fellowships are supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in partnership with the British Library. Through this program, fellows will work with rare historical collections, manuscripts, and archives while contributing to research, cataloguing, and knowledge sharing. The fully funded fellowship focuses on strengthening international collaboration and improving access to important cultural and historical materials.

For the 2027 cycle, two specialized fellowship programs are available under the Chevening British Library Fellowships. Each fellowship selects one outstanding candidate and focuses on a specific regional collection. Fellows will conduct research projects, develop collection guides, publish blog posts, and present their findings, helping researchers and the public better understand the British Library’s global collections.

Eligibility Criteria of Chevening British Library Fellowships:

Chevening Overseas Territories in the Atlantic and Caribbean British Library Fellowship

  • Must be a citizen and resident of Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Montserrat, St Helena, or Turks and Caicos Islands.
  • Must have a postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Should have at least five years of professional or research experience.
  • Must have a strong background in humanities research or experience working with libraries, archives, or cultural collections.
  • Should have good research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Must have good knowledge of the history or culture of at least one British Overseas Territory.
  • Must currently be working professionally or enrolled in a PhD program (the PhD should not be with a UK, EU, or US university).

Chevening Southeast Europe British Library Fellowship

  • Must be a citizen and resident of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, or Turkey.
  • Must have a postgraduate degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Should have at least five years of professional or academic research experience.
  • Must know at least two Southeast European languages, such as Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Macedonian, Romanian, Serbian, or Slovenian.
  • Should have a strong interest in the history and culture of the Balkan region.
  • Experience working with library collections, datasets, or research records is useful.
  • Must currently be employed or enrolled in a PhD program (the PhD should not be with a UK, EU, or US university).
