Through the Amgen Scholars Program, selected undergraduate students get the opportunity to participate in funded scientific research projects. The program began in the U.S. in 2006, expanded to Europe in 2008, and launched in Japan in 2015 at both Kyoto University and the University of Tokyo.

The primary goal of this summer internship program is to support undergraduate students who are interested in a career in biology. It provides these students with an eight-week research experience in biomedical science, allowing them to connect with leading faculty and gain hands-on research skills with highly dedicated professors and researchers across several graduate schools.

The Amgen Scholars Program 2026 is designed to give students practical research experience. By the end of the program, students will gain valuable knowledge, skills, and experience in conducting research. Eligibility Criteria of the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program 2026:

  • Applicants must be undergraduate students enrolled in a university/college that awards a bachelor’s degree, mainly in the Asia region.
  • They must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study by the time the program starts.
  • They must not be graduating before the program begins and must have at least one semester or quarter left after the program ends.
  • Applicants must have a strong academic record and an interest in pursuing a research degree (such as a Ph.D.) in the future.
  • Good English proficiency is required. Non-native English speakers or those whose first language is not English must provide one of the following minimum test scores:
    • TOEFL iBT: 72
    • IELTS: 5.5 (overall band)
    • Cambridge English FCE
    • TOEIC: 1095 total (or TOEIC L&R: 785 and TOEIC S&W: 310)

How to Apply for UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program 2026:

  • Register on the TAO portal with your full legal name to begin the process.
  • Find the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program in the portal and start your application.
  • Upload Required Documents
  • Request two through TAO, with one from a faculty member.
  •  Ensure all sections are completed; edits cannot be made after submission.
  • Applications are reviewed from February to mid-March, with notifications sent via TAO and email.
